Tips For Moving With Your Pet

by The Peggy Graves Team

You've just purchased a new home. Boxes are packed, movers have been scheduled, but how much thought have you put into making sure your pet is ready for the move. Here are some tips to help with the transition.

1. Moving can be a very stressful time for the whole family, remember your pet senses your stress. Try to stay calm throughout the process and not only will your pet thank you but the whole family will be grateful.

2. Contact your veterinarian and ask for a copy of your pets medical records. If your pet is not up to date on vaccinations now would be a great time to make an appointment to be sure Fido is not only current on vaccinations but healthy enough for travel. If your pet tends to get car sick go ahead and ask the vet for some preventative meds for nausea as well as flea and tick medication.

3. Be sure your pet is wearing ID on his collar just in case he decides to leap out of the car during a pit stop on the way to his new home.

4. To help your pet feel more comfortable in the car be sure to bring along his favorite bedding and toys.

5. Bring along plenty of your pets favorite kibble and water and travel bowls and be sure it's accessible in the car. Just don't over feed, especially if your pet tends to get car sick.

6. Make plenty of pit stops for Fido and walk your pet as much possible. Don't forget to bring along poop bags.

7. Keep your pet safe by providing some type of pet restraint the your pet is comfortable with. For instance a pet carrier or pet seat belt is a great way to keep your pet safe during a long road trip.
